hello, hello! is anyone out there?
i am squid :] i am a 21 year old college student somewhere in the midwestern united states. i'm studying audio production and engineering, with a minor in history. i can whisper-sing, i can play guitar, i played clarinet, and i can waddle around on various keyboard instruments on a rather recreational level, but i'm rather mediocre at all of these things at best. in spite of that though someday i want to release my own music to give back a little to all the music that has shaped my path in life. i am an avowed socialist, but i'm trying to figure out what that exactly means to me. i like to walk around in the night and in the rain. i don't like the heat. i want to get out of this place someday
dreamwidth as a site is incredibly fascinating to me as it still tries to evoke the ethos for this often-overlooked 2009-2012 era of the internet. maybe when nostalgia catches up it won't be so unique but nevertheless it's grabbed me by the horns and they're starting to come off of my head; i enjoy this particular aspect as everything seems so dusty and covered with loving cobwebs; thousands of accounts last active 517 weeks ago; hundreds of personal museums of thoughts and feelings with ancient paintings and decaying statues from years gone by. stuff like that makes me sentimental, you know? makes me wonder what all the people behind those inactive accounts are doing now. i guess that's what drew me to this outside of any other potential thought-vomiting place i could have gone
the scope of this journal has been narrowed down to neurotic music analysis, and a general journal for what i'm thinking or feeling or doing at a certain time. i like history, politics, and literature, and would like to write about those topics, but i don't feel like i have any grand statements to make on any of those topics. maybe in the future
rateyourmusic.com/~squid771 is the platform i'm most active on by virtue of loving music so much, and you can find a lot of my other socials on there ^_^

music roundup: june 2025

this month i did something a bit different where i write out my thoughts to new albums as i listen to them instead of just like... ya know... procrastinating and then writing fuckall down on the spot.
just a bit of a heads-up for the two people that read this; i am currently doing a study abroad program in vienna as i am writing this! what! this is going to go on until the very end of july and as such i probably won't be posting a music roundup in july for the fact that i am very busy and will not have too much time to listen to new music. or maybe not? we'll see. i hope i'm able to but you know how it is :]

i feel like the longer this series goes on the more i have to write. that's probably a good thing but god damn this is a lot of work to type out, i've been here for two hours already. so much for studying :D

May. 31st, 2025 10:13 pmanother month... another month of music! maybe not as full as i would have liked but that's just how it goes sometimes. instead, i found there was a lot of revisiting i did instead of trying to find music that was completely new to me. there's a merit to that; if you've gone [X] years without having last listened to something, it can regain its lost luster or even obtain a new one that was previously unseen to your eyes. i'm quite sleepy and not sure how to properly introduce this, so, without further ado:

music roundup: april 2025
Apr. 29th, 2025 02:42 pmsomething i've been doing for some two-odd years is making spotify playlists where i collect music that i discover for the first time in that month, just to have it all nice and organized for easy access. at some points, though, there's so much music that i find that it can be a bit hard to wade through the bog and remember music that i really, really particularly liked in a month... more accurately; why i liked them in the first place, or what my thoughts were on a piece of music! it gets kinda depressing if i see and album and just think "yeah i liked that" or "it was alright" and "this song was cool"... and this is where dreamwidth comes in! i now have a place where i can talk at length about the music that i like, and get other people to acquire my music taste by osmosis. the best of both worlds (o˘◡˘o)
this is a day early but i don't expect to have the time to listen to anything new tomorrow!
